Motorists parking their cars at HDB multi-storey carparks will no longer have to walk up and down flights of stairs, as the housing board will install lifts in all of its older multi-storey carparks, according to National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

Out of the 622 carparks affected, 74 have already been installed with lifts. Overall, there are 740 HDB multi-storey carparks, 118 of which were constructed from 2007 onwards and have been equipped with lifts.

Mr Khaw noted that the HDB is studying when the lifts can be installed. He didn’t reveal the costs of constructing and maintaining them.

When contacted, a spokesman from the National Development Ministry said more details will be announced in Parliament during the budget debate next week.

Mr Khaw’s statement was in reply to a question from MP Gan Thiam Poh (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC), who asked the housing board to consider installing such lifts in his ward.

In an interview with the Straits Times, Mr Gan said that he is “very, very happy” with the ministry’s announcement.

“I asked for my constituency, and I didn’t expect the minister to say ‘yes’ to the whole of Singapore,” he said.

Lee Bee Wah, Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for National Development and Environment, also welcomed the announcement.

“It is a natural progression to prepare the society for an ageing population,” she said.
